The Establishment of MAP Technical Committee (MTC)

MAP Technical Committee (MTC)

Term 1 is open for election! [Election] Term 1 - MAP Technical Committee (MTC) Election Q4 2022 - Governance - MAP Protocol Forum

:blue_heart: Thanks to all mappers and MAP validators, MAP Mainnet has worked stably and securely for over a month. Currently, the MAP technical team is busy integrating with major EVM L1s such as BNB Smart Chain and Klaytn, and non-EVM L1s NEAR, Sui, and Aptos. Since the Mainnet launch, we see a greater community involvement in almost all aspects, from nodes, proposals, tools, governance, economic ideas and code governance.

In order to build the MAP omnichain community to become a globally distributed home to innovators, developers, and contributors supporting the protocol’s platform, ecosystem, and applications, we are planning to roll out grant programs for builders, researchers, and community contributors (when the proposal initiated by the MAP community member rabbit_11bit is passed on-chain).

Before we move forward with MAP grant programs, we need to make sure there will be a group of blockchain-savvy to :computer: evaluate the submitted applications from the technical perspective while at the same time :raised_hands: maintaining democracy throughout decision making.

We believe now is a good time to take decentralization further and establish the MAP Technical Committee (TC) to ensure the validity & effectiveness of submitted projects, and guarantee the proper usage of MAP resources. Below are the details of MTC.

MAP Technical Committee (refers to “TC” below)

:mage: To avoid potential misunderstandings, we’ll start with what technical committee does and does not do:

  • TC does not make consensus decisions. Governance and consensus decisions will continue to be made on chain by $MAP members.

  • TC carries no collective or personal liability. TC only provides technical advice and evaluates whether the project proposed/accomplished are up to the technical standard. Project team is responsible for seeking professional’s audit opinion and for codes’ overall quality.

  • To ensure continuous, healthy, and fast project flow, TC will only be responsible for technical assessment of the proposed project. TC does not participate in other steps in the grant application flow, but can veto a proposed project from being passed. For vetoed projects to receive grants again, it will need to be approved unanimously next time.

  • TC members are recruited from the MAP community. TC members are MAP community members with software development expertise or knowledge and their participation is entirely voluntary.

TC Membership

:mage: TC members will be elected every six months, and members can also be added or removed during the process.

Criteria for becoming a MAP TC member:

  • Have solid tech background (demonstrated by Github and/or Linkedin)
  • Experienced in blockchain (demonstrated by Twitter and other social media)

Committee organization:

  • Size: 5 people for one term
  • Term length: six months
  • Rotating mechanism: committee changes every six month.

Election process:

  • All candidates will introduce themselves in forum in one post thread
  • MAP members vote for the candidates.
  • The top 5 candidates will be elected as TC members

Responsibility:

  • Review grant projects from technical perspective and give feedback
  • Assess the progress and results of projects when proposal passed
  • Communicate to the community about review progress

Note: This is just an initial process to kickstart the formation of the committee. As MAP continues to expand its decentralization initiative, the future goal is to establish a well researched and evolving process for governance and selection of committee members as on-chain governance capabilities increases. :seedling:

How will this benefit the MAP community?

1. Positive outcome for builders & researchers

Members in MAP TC will be professionals in blockchain technology, especially in zk technology and light-client. They can provide necessary support for builders and also give constructive feedback for researchers, so participants can polish their work before submitting for a grant.

2. Positive outcome for MAP community

  • Ensure MAP resources are allocated to the right project, the right builder, and the right researcher. MAP resources will be effectively distributed.

  • Accelerate decision making process so projects and researches can proceed forward faster instead of keeping them in the air.

3. Learning opportunities

Strengthen the technical and research foundation for MAP Ecosystem and present MAP as a place where the general public can gain unrecognized insights about omnichain and crosschain.

4. Democracy Maintained

Through vote delegation, MAP members still hold voting rights and practice voting power in a more flexible manner. For anyone joining MAP TC, they will need to run for election and combat for competency. The rotating mechanism further mitigates the risk of centralizing decision making in a fixed group of people, adding more diversity and flexibility.

How to Join?

  • Go to the election post on the forum.
  • Introduce yourself briefly.
  • Link your GitHub/LinkedIn/Twitter/Reddit, or any social platforms/ credentials that speak for your experience and technical background in blockchain, especially in light client and zk technology.
  • Then, the MAP foundation will start the election process for members to vote.
